Initially launched to great acclaim at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991 the Bentley Continental R was the first Bentley to feature a body that was not shared with a Rolls-Royce model since the S3 Continental in 1965. At the time of its surprise launch it was the most expensive production car in the world and it successfully upstaged the new Mercedes S Class W140 that was also launched in Geneva that year. The impact of the new Bentley Continental R was so great that the Sultan of Brunei bought the show car for over £2million.
The "Continental" designation recalls the Bentley Continental of the post-war period. The "R" was meant to recall the R Type Bentleys from the 1950s as well as the Turbo R of the 1980s and 90's where the "R" refers to "roadholding".
Powered by a 6.75l Garrett- turbocharged engine the first release of cars between 1991-93 produced 325bhp at 4000rpm but in 1994 this was increased, by introducing revised cylinder heads, to 360bhp at 4000rpm. Although never officially published by Rolls Royce at the time the torque was also believed to have increased from 450lb/ft in the early cars to 500lb/ft in the 1994 release.
With a list price of £180,120 in 1994 the new models included the existing GM 4L80-E automatic transmission and self-levelling hydraulic suspension along with ventilated disc brakes at the front with twin calipers plus some new revisions that were introduced in 1994. These included the new cylinder heads that were developed with Cosworth and larger 17 inch alloy wheels with a new 7 spoke design.
With production of the Continental R coming to an end in 2003 it is now widely acknowledged as a rare modern classic and available for a fraction of the original price.
